FIFA president Gianni Infantino feels that the new Club World Cup is going to change the game forever. The format has now changed to a once-in-four-year event.
Earlier, every continental club champion got the chance to feature at the event every year.
But now there are 32 clubs from different parts of the world battling it out to become the world champions.
It is a concept that has made this competition worth winning. As Saudi clubs have spent great sums in the last two to three seasons, it is a chance for them to go head-to-head with top clubs from different parts of the world and see where they stand.
Even for the growth of football, the format can work. There are 32 clubs in eight groups. Every group has four teams, with finishing top two finishing teams opening the doors of the round of 16. Infantino feels the Club World Cup in 2026 is as big as the 1930 FIFA World Cup, which was the first edition of the giant tournament.
The United States have the responsibility to host the CWC, starting this weekend.
Infantino told AFP: “It starts a new era of football, a new era of club football. A little bit like when, in 1930, the first World Cup, right, started.”
The FIFA Club World Cup is not at the level of the Champions League yet. But in future, the event can become the biggest club football competition.
