Manchester United registered the biggest win of the 2024-25 season at Old Trafford on Thursday, beating Lyon 5-4 in the second leg of the Europa League quarters.
As the first leg last week ended in a 2-2 draw, the United went past Lyon 7-6 on aggregate to reach the semi-finals.
However, the victory did come with ease. United started the first half by scoring two goals, thanks to Manuel Ugarte (10’) and Diogo Dalot (45+1’).
However, Lyon fired back in the second half with the help of Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico scoring once each before the 77th minute.
Like the first leg, the game in Manchester saw a 2-2 draw after the first 90 minutes.
In the extra time, Lyon took the lead with Rayan Cherki (104’) and Alexandre Lacazette (109’ P) adding two more goals to the tally.
It felt in most United fans’ minds that the game was over. However, a dramatic comeback happened. Bruno Fernandes blasted a penalty in the 114th minute. Six months later, Kobbie Mainoo scored the equaliser.
A minute later (120+1’), Harry Maguire blasted the winner.
The Red Devils boss Ruban Amorim is happy with the magnificent comeback and said: “We have to take a risk and save some players.”
“If you look at our season, the most important thing for everybody is Europa League.”
In the semis, MU will lock horns against Athletic Bilbao.
