Fran Kirby retired from his national duty just months before the Women’s Euros. The former Chelsea attacking midfielder played 77 times for England from 2015 to 2024, scoring 19 goals.
In 2021, she made two appearances for Great Britain at the Olympics. A year later (2022), the 31-year-old played a vital role in making the Lionesses win the UEFA Women’s Championship. In 2015, she was a part England squad that came third at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
From 2013 to 2014, she was a part of the England U23 side. Kirby, who moved to Brighton & Hove Albion from Chelsea in 2024, will only play at the club level.
She said: “The plan was to retire after the Euros but after speaking to Sarina I’m not going to make the squad.”
Kirby wanted to play another Euros, but head coach Sarina Wiegman made it clear that she was not in her plans for the major event. This led her to retire and end the national team chapter.
