Cricket legend Anil Kumble feels that former CSK captain MS Dhoni might not play any match as a regular starting XI player this season.
The Indian Premier League 2025 will start with Kolkata Knight Riders facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Eden Gardens on 22 March.
MS Dhoni is not the captain of CSK anymore, with Ruturaj Gaikwad leading CSK.
Kumble sees Dhoni play other roles in the IPL 2025.
He said: “With Ruturaj captaining the team, Dhoni might not step onto the field this season. However, retention rules could keep him in the squad, and with the impact player rule, he can still contribute without playing every match.”
Dhoni was retained by CSK, who is looking great on nets, for INR 4 cr as an uncapped player.
An uncapped player is someone who has not played any international cricket in the last five years, with Dhoni playing his last game for India in 2020.
In 264 IPL matches, the 43-year-old has scored 5243 runs at a strike rate of 137.53. He has scored 24 half-centuries in the IPL.
As a captain, he led CSK to win five IPL titles. Only Rohit Sharma is another captain to have won five IPL titles.
