The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner with Argentina Julian Alvarez’s agent; Fernando Hidalgo, told Winwin (via Liverpool Echo) that Liverpool were keen to sign the striker from Machester City last summer before he made the move to Atletico Madrid.
Alvarez left Man City last summer due to not getting chances to lead the forward line ahead of Erling Haaland, who has scored 21 goals in 28 Premier League appearances this season.
It was next to impossible for manager Pep Guardiola to palace to him ahead of Haaland, who is being seen as the best striker in the world of football.
This was the core reason behind the Argentine striker leaving the club for Atletico.
He joined the Sky Blues in 2022 and left in 2024, with adding 20 goals and nine assists in 67 PL apps. Seeing these mega stats, the Reds wanted to sign the striker as said by the agent of Alvarez.
Hidalgo said: “I confirm that Liverpool were interested in Julian last season.”
His arrival in Spain has turned well, with the 25-year-old striker having scored 22 goals and five assists in 43 overall apps.
However, Hidalgo did not say that the star striker was leaving Atletico Madrid any time soon.
The Reds are looking to offload striker Darwin Nunez this summer, looking to add a striker.
However, signing Alverez would be a hard call as Atletico reportedly paid £81.8 million to sign him in the 2024 summer transfer market.
He has signed a long-term deal with Diego Simeone’s side, lasting until the 2030 summer.
