Manchester United had to settle with a 2-2 draw on their trip to Lyon on Thursday. It was the first-leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, which took place at the Groupama Stadium.
The Red Devils had the opportunity to win the first leg 2-1. However, Ryan Cherki’s late goal in 90+5 minutes helped Lyon have a 2-2 draw.
It was the home side who scored the first goal in the 25th minute, thanks to Thiago Almada. However, the Red Devils came back with Leny Yoro’s late first-half goal and Joshua Zirkzee’s 86th-minute strike.
MU could have won the game 2-0 or 2-1, but the former Inter Milan goalkeeper made two mistakes and helped Lyon score two goals.
As a result, they have to win the second leg at home next Thursday with a final margin to keep their Champions Legaue hopes alive for the next season.
Winning the Europa League will make Man United qualify for the 2025-26 UCL battle. In the Premier Legaue, they are in 13th position and already out of the UCL and Europa League race.
Early this week, Former Manchester United holding midfielder Nemanja Matic criticised Onana for not living up to the expectations since joining the English club in 2023 from Inter Milan. Matic plays for Lyon at present.
Onana then reverted with a post on X, lifting the 2024 FA Cup title. However as he did fail in the game, it made Matic’s claims stronger.
After the match in France, Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim did back his goalkeeper and said: “There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him, so the most important thing is to be natural and then when the time comes I will choose the best XI to play. But I’m really confident in Andre.”
