It was a hard pill to take for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta as his team faced defeat in the second leg 2-1 against hosts Paris Saint-Germain, losing the semi-final clash 3-1 on aggregate in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The final will now happen between Inter Milan and PSG at the Allianz Arena on 31 May. Spanish international Fabian Ruiz scored a goal for the home side in the first half, taking the lead 2-0 overall.
As in the first leg, PSG won the contest 1-0 in North London last week. Making things worse for the Gunners, Achraf Hakimi scored a goal in the 72nd minute to make the lead 3-0.
Bukayo Saka’s 76th-minute strike did bring some hope for the visitors. But Arsenal did not add any goals from there.
As the UCL was the only hope for the Gunners to win silverware this season, it has made a huge impact on fans’ dreams of winning the first Champions League title.
Arteta felt that it was goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who played the biggest role in both legs.
“When you analyse both games, who has been the best player? The MVP has been the same player, the goalkeeper.” Arteta said.
Just like Arsenal, PSG have never become the European champions. However, in the final, they will have three-time winners in Inter Milan.
