Unlike the top four teams in the Premier League, now in the Champions Legaue, the top five teams qualify for the mega battle from England.
It has made the qualification a bit easier in a way. Hence, former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feels that the Europa Legaue winner should not play in the Champions Legaue until they don’t qualify for it via the domestic league.
Despite Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United showing utterly poor form in the PL this season, both English clubs have a chance to play in the UCL next season. But they have to win the Europa Legaue title.
Being in a comfortable position in the semis, Man United and Spurs have a window to win the Europa Legaue.
In 2014, UEFA did make a change in the rules and allowed the Europa Legaue champions to get a ticket for next season’s UCL.
But Wenger thinks that PL having five spots already and then the winner of Europa Legaue gets the chance too make it sound no so brilliant.
Arsenal great told BeIN Sports: No, they should qualify automatically for the Europa League again but not necessarily for the Champions League – especially when you’re in the Premier League where already five teams qualify. I think it’s something [for Uefa] to think about and to review.”
Ahead of the second leg, Man United hold a 3-0 lead over Athletic Club. Spurs have a 3-1 advantage over Bodo/Glimt.
When asked about Wenger’s comments, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou said: “It’s a debate that’s been raging for years, at least the last eight days. I’ve never heard it before,”
“You put that club into any sentence or any issue and invariably they all come out and try to diminish it as much as they can.”
The Europa League’s biggest victory for most clubs is the UEFA Champions League. This is something that makes this event worthy for the fans and clubs.
Other than England, Spain holds the privilege of taking the top five teams from the domestic league for the UCL. In fact, this is the first season where teams have this window.
