Ahead of the IOC’s upcoming session in Greece, boxing is set be officially named as a sport to be featured at the 2028 Olympic Games.
Outgoing IOC president Thomas Bach sees boxing as a crucial part of the mega event. He feels strongly that the very fight sport is set to feature at the 2028 Olympics.
“After the provisional recognition of World Boxing in February we were in a position to take this decision,” Bach said on Monday.
In 2022, boxing was not the part of 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. However, in Feb 2025, World Boxing did get the green light as the Governing Body for amateur boxing.
This recommendation still requires the approval of IOC, which the experts feel will come with ease.
It was a huge burden for the boxing world to form a new body that could work to develop young boxers. In the past two editions (Olympics), the IOC ran all the operations for boxing as they suspended the International Boxing Association (IBA) in 2019 due to their unprofessional behaviour.
In June 2023, IBA; which is Russian-led, did fail to make reforms. As a result, they were stripped of their influential position.
World Boxing, which was established in April 2023, holds 84 active member nations at preset.
The IOC has made it clear that only World Boxing-approved member nations can take part in the 2028 Olympics. They have to register before the qualification rounds start.
