It was a semi-final entry game for both Australia and Afghanistan in Group B at the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, nearly 30 minutes of rain in Lahore, Pakistan, impacted the result. Thus, the match was declared a washout.
Despite Afghanistan’s team batting for 50 overs, scoring 273 runs and Australia adding 109/1 in 12.5 overs, only a small portion of the rain at Gaddafi Stadium made both teams settle with a point each.
For Australia, they have collated four points from three matches. The first one contains a record chase of 352 overs England and then the game against South Africa was washed out without even an action happening on the pitch.
This has made them collect four points from three games.
On the other hand, Afghanistan lost their first game against South Africa and then won the second versus England in a close contest.
In terms of Australia’s batting, it seemed as if the game was going in the favour of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup winners. However, the rain did help Afghanistan in a way to collect a point.
Now Afghanistan need the help of England to beat South Africa this evening by a huge margin to reach the semis alongside Australia.
However, the net run rate of Hashmatullah Shahidi’s side is too low. The washout also impacted Australia as they had a chance to collect all two points.
South Africa winning over England will make them top Group B with five points. But even if they lose the game not by a huge margin, Temba Bavuma’s side will reach the semis by being second in Group B.
But the washout and a point have still given hope to Afghanistan.
