Mitchell Johnson, who played in the Indian Premier League from 2013 to 2018, makes a bold take on stopping the biggest T20 event of the year in between.
As the tensions between India and Pakistan hit hard last week, the BCCI stopped the IPL action before announcing the return on May 17.
Despite India and Pakistan agreeing to the ceasefire, the former Australian fast bowler wants the IPL to stop.
Earlier, the IPL 2025 final was planned to happen on May 25. But now it is getting staged on June 3, which is not too far away.
The BCCI is not even stopping overseas players who are leaving the action due to national duties. There are just a few games left before the season ends.
The IPL, which first started in 2008, has never been stopped due to geopolitical concerns before the 2025 season.
The event has helped several Australian players become rich, including Johnson.
Johnson said: “While Cricket Australia has empowered players to make their own decisions, the weight of those choices can be heavy. Opting not to play could lead to disappointment or even professional and financial repercussions down the track, but prioritising safety is first and foremost.”
In cricket, the IPL has played the biggest role ever to make cricket boards worldwide generate a lot of revenue when their players play.
However, such a statement hits the Indian fanbase hard. Many Indian cricketers have said that Australian cricketers did not treat them that well before the IPL. However, as IPL helps them change lives financially, they have become soft-spoken since 2008.
In Australia, the fanbase on social media is backing Johnson. However, it is not the case in India.
