Former India cricketer Akash Chopra is surprised with IPL teams mishandling all-arounder Washington Sundar.
Sundar played a key role in Gujarat Titans beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets on Sunday.
GT did not use Sundar’s bowling services but gave him a chance to play as a batsman, where the India international added 49 runs in just 29 balls.
As a result, Gujarat managed to chase the 153-run target with ease in 16.4 overs.
After seeing his impressive performance, Chopra felt that Washington is one of those players who has had not been used to the best of levels by his current side GT and former team SRH.
Chopra said: “Washington was with SRH for the longest time. They paid Rs 8 crore to acquire his services and yet didn’t give him a proper opportunity. Even here at GT, he was picked up but didn’t get a single game until today — and still didn’t bowl. It’s quite bizarre how he’s been handled at the IPL level. But what I found exciting and impressive from both GT’s and Washington’s point of view is that he now gives them one more option. In their top three, they’ve got one left-hander, Sai Sudharsan, who bats deep. But after that, it was almost an all right-handed lineup until Rahul Tewatia. Now, with Washington Sundar, they have another left-handed option.”
From 2022 to 2024, the 25-year-old all-arounder was a part of SRH.
But in those three seasons, he played just 19 times.
Even it was his first game for GT, having missed to feature in the XI in their first three games.
Washington is capable of both batting and bowling, something that helps in the T20 format a lot.
