Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup showdown in North America, Mexico’s famous Azteca Stadium sold the naming rights for 2.1 billion pesos ($105 million).
The mega amount has been paid by Banorte as a part of the 12-year deal (loan). As the stadium owner Ollamani is not doing well in the Mexican Stock Exchange, this decision was taken to generate sums on Friday.
Azteca has a huge capacity of 87,500 seats and is one of the best-known stadiums all over the world.
“With them (Banorte), we will modernise this iconic stadium, respecting its essence and architectural designs recognised for decades,” Emilio Azcárraga Jean, the owner of Ollamani, said.
“It will be the most important venue to showcase Mexico to the world.”
As a part of renovations since May 2024, no football action has been happening at the stadium, which was first built in 1966.
The United States, Canada and Mexico are hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Iconic Azteca Stadium is famous for hosting the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals.
