New Zealand’s long wait to reach the FIFA World Cup finals is finally over. The All Whites have reached the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 16 years.
Chris Wood’s side outdid New Caledonia 3-0. It was the OFC qualifiers’ third-round final, which took place at Eden Park on Monday.
The scoreline remained 0-0 after the first half. But the home side came back stronger in the second half, adding three match-winning goals.
Michael Boxall, Kosta Barbarouses and Elijah Just scored a goal each in the second half to make NZ reach the WC 2026 finals, which will take place in North America.
The United States, Canada and Mexico are the hosts of the mega event in 2026, which will start on 11 June.
New Zealand reached the mega milestone after remaining unbeaten in all five qualifiers. They scored 29 goals in these five games and conceded just one.
It was 1982 and 2010 when the All Whites featured at the FIFA World Cup.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is historic by becoming the first edition where 48 teams will battle for the ultimate glory. In the 2022 edition in Qatar, only 32 teams did take part in the FIFA WC finals.
