Suryakumar Yadav will lead Mumbai Indians against the Chennai Super Kings in their Indian Premier League opener.
MI management decided that Hardik Pandya had to face a one-match ban due to slow over-rate offences that happened last season.
On Sunday, March 23, MI will face CSK away from home. While facing the Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai), MI remained behind the required over rate. It was their last game of the 2024 IPL season. As a result, captain Pandya had to pay a 30% fine on his match fee.
Hardik said on Suryakumar leading MI in their IPL opener: “Surya leads India as well. When I am not there, he is the ideal choice in this format and an exciting one as well.”
Suryakumar is not new to the captaincy as he leads India as a skipper in T20 format. He, recently, led India to outdo England 4-1 in T20Is.
But there were concerns over his batting as he did score just 38 runs in five matches. Against Gujarat Titans on March 29, Hardik will come back and take charge of MI captaincy.
