Russia faced a ban by FIFA and UEFA in 2022 after it launched a war in Ukraine.
As the qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America started in November 2024, Russia did not get the official chance to take part in the qualification process for the mega 2026 event in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Trump became the US president for the second time in November 2024, intending to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Other than the three host nations, there are 45 places for other participants to qualify and play at the World Cup finals.
Trump, who is not a mega football follower, did not know that Russia are serving a FIFA ban. While sitting alongside Gianni Infantino, he said: “I didn’t know that. Is that right?”
“That is right,” said Infantino.
“They are banned for the time being from playing but we hope that something happens and peace will happen so that Russia can be readmitted.”
Trump said: “That’s possible. Hey, that could be a good incentive, right?
“We want to get them to stop. We want them to stop. Five thousand young people a week are being killed – it’s not even believable.”
Trump’s view to include Russia at the World Cup in 2026 might get FIFA’s approval, as it could help to stop the war.
They might work to let Russia lift the ban on other sports all over the world.
