Gregg Popovich has finished his 29-year run as the San Antonio Spurs head coach. However, it is not like Popovich is leaving the Spurs from every angle.
He will now take over the role as ‘Basketball Operations President’.
On Friday, the San Antonio Spurs confirmed this historical update. 1,422 wins in the regular NBA season, the glory of five NBA championships and a career-lasting 29 seasons, Popovich has done everything for the Spurs at the best of levels.
His recent NBA championship title came back in 2014. No NBA head coach other than Popovich holds 1,422 wins in the regular NBA season.
Popovich said: “While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach.”
“I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and I am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organisation, community and city that are so meaningful to me.”
Back in November 2024, the 74-year-old faced a mild stroke before beating the Minnesota Timberwolves. He has not returned to the sidelines ever since.
Not having Popovich did not help the Spurs reach the 2025 NBA playoffs. Mitch Johnson filled in for Popovich’s replacement post, suffering a stroke. As a result, Johnson gets the role as the Spurs’ head coach.
In 1988, Popovich became the head coach of the Spurs. From 1996 to 98, he was a part of the Golden State Warriors before returning to his beloved franchise.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Popovich led the US men’s basketball team to win the gold medal. Three years later, he became a part of the ‘Basketball Hall of Fame’ (coach).
