Lionel Messi wanted to win the Concacaf Champions Cup. However, the semifinal exit against the Vancouver Whitecaps has put his dream on a cold shelf for now.
Inter Miami lost the second leg at home 3-1, losing the semis tie 5-1 on aggregate. Jordi Alba scored a goal in the 9th minute.
But a strong comeback by the away side in the second half made an impact. Brian White, Pedro Vite and Sebastian Berhalter scored one goal each for the visitors and opened the doors for the final.
Messi’s Inter did lose the away leg 2-0. Miami will feature at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in June. They hold the fifth spot in the MLS Eastern Conference, with seven matches remaining.
Javier Mascherano, who is the head coach of Inter Miami, said: “Although it was the first time the club had advanced to the semi-finals, the defeat hurts us a lot because we imagined reaching the final.”
“I’m not thinking about the Club World Cup. There’s a month and a half to go, and it would be a mistake to focus on that.”
At the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Inter will battle against Al Ahly, Porto and Palmeiras in the group stage.
